Which computer do you
think will last longer?
Dirty PC |

Clean PC |
Our computers sit down under the desk quietly, and we
never think about them until something goes wrong.
Many times, failure of computer equipment can be due to
overheating. It's not something that usually
happens overnight, but over months without preventative
maintenance. Every computer has a air system that
allows cool air to come in and hot air to be blown out.
Dust and debris gets sucked into your computer from it's
cooling fans and collects in areas throughout the its route.
Which is typically, every vital part of your system.
 |
To your left, you will see the back of
your average computer which has two vents.
The one at the bottom is the intake of air
and the top is where hot air is blown out.
If anywhere along the air path, gets
blocked, the whole system of air handling is
compromised and the heat buildup process has
begun. As you can see from the picture,
the bottom intake vent has been blocked by
normal, everyday dust. Even if
you have the best kept house or office on
the block, this constant suction action,
brings in any particle of dust in the vents
area.
At the time of this picture, this PC was
6 months old and already blocked up like
this. Of course, this is on the
outside, and you can easily clean this dirt
off with a sweeper, which we highly
recommend. However, it is vital that
you turn the computer off before you attempt
this. If you don't as you break up the
dust, it will be sucked into the computer.

| Now for the tricky part.
When that dust makes it inside, it builds up
on the CPU fan, and on the power supply
vents. The two most important parts
you don't want this happening on. CPU
fans are notorious for quietly failing.
Dirt builds up to the point that the very
low power fan, can not longer spin its
blades... Then that dust laying on the
chips makes a very nice thermal blanket, so
even normal disbursement of heat, cannot
occur. You usually don't find this
out, until your CPU overheats and now, you
have a dead PC, with $100's in repair parts.
The reason we call the dust buildup inside
tricky, is dust creates static charge.
Static charge kills computers. So
without the proper equipment and methods,
you can destroy the computer you were trying
to maintain...not to mention the 1000's of
very fragile electronic parts that will fail
on the slightest nick or bump. |
